日本アフリカ学会第60回学術大会

Public Symposium in the 60th Annual Conference of JAAS

The Future of Africa and the Young Generations

We have seen African societies in rapid transitions, where the steady growth of education, proliferation of mobile communication, and development of financial services to the poor have been progressing. Accordingly, peoples' lives have been changing as in, for instance, interpersonal networking, income generation, political participation, religion, and entertainment as well as perspectives and beliefs. While there are big hopes that those changes will remove constraints in society and raise economic and social welfare, most people watching Africa presumably share concerns that they do not necessarily alleviate poverty and inequality and rather, generate different marginalized groups of people. Since we have no prior experiences of similar changes to refer to, we can hardly imagine the future of African societies.

Nevertheless, we may be able to have some ideas of the future by closely looking at the youth, who are the most positive and susceptive to recent changes. In this symposium, we will think of the future of Africa through field studies on the African youth.
