演題: Negotiating Unintended Marital Outcomes of using Modern Contraceptives in Uganda
(研究会題目:Situating Gender, Sexuality and Family in Eastern Africa: Lessons and Challenges from Uganda and Beyond)
講師:Prof. Peter Atekyereza (Makerere University)
要旨:In most parts of Africa virility and womanhood are strongly revered because they relate to their ability to bring forth new life, which is considered a sign of God’s favour and blessing and an important rhythm of nature. The manifestation of this form of sexuality was structured and regulated through socio-cultural beliefs and norms. Traditionally, getting pregnant outside marriage in Africa was abominable and culprits were severely punished. Birth of a child was and remains instrumental to peace and stability of family relations and society: traditionally, it was a joyous moment for biological parents and relatives both the living and departed. Overtime, the value of children, especially the number of children a family can have, has become contentious. Development economists argue that uncontrolled population growth is responsible for poverty and deprivation among families in high fertility rural regions of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Hence, beyond the indigenous and/or traditional methods of contraception, the use of modern contraceptives has been promoted for better family planning and maternal and child health. However, the use of modern contraceptives has had unintended results, which have affected spousal relationships sometimes leading to contradictory outcomes. This presentation focuses on some of these contradictory outcomes and their implications for marital sexual arrangements and stability.
