The 61th Annual Conference of the Japan Association for African Studies (JAAS) will be held in-person at Minoh Campas of Osaka University in Minoh City, Osaka on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19, 2024. Please register for the conference on the JAAS website by Thursday, April 25, 2024. Your participation is highly welcome.

How to Register and to Give a Presentation
【All members】Please register your participation or non-participation on the JAAS website by Thursday, April 25. (Even if you cannot attend the conference, please submit the proxy form to the General Meeting.)
【Those who wish to attend】Please pay your registration fee by Thursday, April 25. (Payment information will be provided in the second circular.)
【Those who wish to give a presentation】Please register your attendance and the title of your presentation by Wednesday, January 31 and submit your abstract by Thursday, February 29. If the abstract is not submitted by the deadline, we will assume that you have cancelled your presentation.

Presentation
Individual oral presentation, poster presentation, and forum presentation will be accepted. If you wish to make a presentation, please select one of the presentation formats.
On the afternoon of Saturday, May 18, core time will be provided solely for poster presentations. We encourage poster presentations as they allow more time for in-depth discussion.
Should we have an appreciable number of applications to present in English, we will consider setting up sessions in English.
Adjustment of the Number of Presentations
As approved at the 2008 General Meeting, the secretariat of the JAAS annual conference is allowed to screen abstracts depending on the availability of the venue. Kindly note that you may be asked to change the format of your presentation, due to limitations of the venue at the 60th JAAS annual conference.
Application for Presentation and Submission of Abstracts
There are two steps: (1) registration for application of presentation, (2) submission of abstract. Please note that each step needs to be done at different websites.

☞ Please prepare your abstract according to the “Guidelines for Preparation of Abstracts” below and submit it at the Abstract Submission Form. (A Google account is required to submit your abstract through this website. If you do not have a Google account, please create one. It is free of charge.)

- Since 2016, the conference program and abstracts have been posted on the JAAS conference website. This year’s program and abstracts will also be viewable on the 60th JAAS conference website for a certain period of time before and after the conference. Kindly note that by submitting your abstracts, you are granting full consent to JAAS to publish your work on this platform.
- Since 2016, non-member researchers working on Africa who live overseas can give presentations at the JAAS annual conference. However, this is limited to those researchers who can secure the support of a JAAS member in their registration, submission of abstract, bank transfer of registration fee, and where required, obtaining a visa. The supporting JAAS member is required to send the presenter's name, specialty, affiliation and email address, as well as his/her own name, affiliation, telephone number and email address to the Dogura Office. The supporting JAAS member is also required to make an online registration and submit the abstract on behalf of the presenter. To register a non-member for the conference, please check the box “会員資格申請中” (in the process of application). The deadlines for application of presentation, submission of abstract, and payment of registration fee are the same as for JAAS members.
Guidelines for Preparation of Abstracts
- You can download and use "Presentation abstract template" and "Forum introduction template"
- In principle, please submit your abstract (as both Word and PDF documents) at the Abstract Submission Form. If you cannot access the Abstract Submission Form, you can send your abstract by email to: jaas61.abstract●gmail.com (Please replace ● with @)
- The file name of your abstract should be designated as follows.
【Individual presentation】Presenter's name_jaas2024 (e.g: HanakoSato_jaas2024)
【Forum presentation】Presenter's name_jaasforum2024 (e.g: TaroYamada_jaasforum2024)
- Abstract should be typed on the A4 size paper with margins of 25 mm on all sides (top, bottom, left and right). You can download and use the "Presentation abstract template".
- Please use MS Mincho font for Japanese text and Times New Roman for English text.
- The title of your abstract should be in 12-point bold font, and subtitle and/or presenter name/s and affiliation/s in 11-point bold.
- Please use 10-point font for the main body of your text and use fixed 14-point line spacing. You may use either Japanese or English. Your abstract must not exceed one page.
- In case that you organize a forum, please also send an additional introductory note, which should include the title of forum, its objective, names of organizer/s and presenter/s, and the order of presentations. You can download and use the "Forum introduction template".
⚠ Important Notice!
- The deadline for submission of your abstract is
Thursday, February 29, 2024 . If we don’t receive your abstract by this date, we will assume that you have cancelled your presentation. - We will not accept your abstract if you have not completed the online registration for the conference by Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
- Since 2016, we have posted abstracts on the JAAS conference website. Please be aware of this fact when you prepare your abstract.
Notes Regarding Presentations
- The oral presentation is 15 minutes including the Q&A.
- The number of presentations as the first author is limited to one presentation per person, for all formats of presentations.
- Be sure to complete your conference registration by January 31, 2024 and submit your abstract by February 29, 2024. Your presentation will NOT be accepted if any of these procedures is incomplete or if you miss a deadline.
- Those wishing to give a poster presentation should also submit an abstract.
- Those making a joint presentation should enter the names of all contributors on the registration form. The presenter (first author) should be a JAAS member.
- If you wish to hold a forum, both organizer and presenter/s should check “Forum” on the registration form. The organizer should enter the names of all presenters under “Presenter”. The maximum time for a forum is 1 hour and 15 minutes (15 minutes per presenter multiplied by the number of presenters, up to a maximum of 5). The forum organizer should collect all the abstracts and submit them together. Please note that we will not accept the forum proposal, unless all the abstracts are submitted together. The forum organizer should also submit an introductory note of the forum by using the appropriate template. You can download and use the "Forum introduction template".
- Non-members who wish to give a presentation (except for non-member researchers on Africa living overseas who have a supporting JAAS member) must complete an application for membership by Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Once your application for membership is approved by the board of directors, you may be asked to pay the membership fee immediately. This will be treated as your membership fee for 2024. For more information, please visit the membership page on the JAAS website. If you know of any non-members who wish to give a presentation, please advise them to complete this process before the deadline.
Registration for the Conference
All participants, including the ones who are not giving a presentation, are required to register for the conference at the JAAS website. We strongly encourage you to complete registration by
- For those who have a problem with the online registration, please contact the Dogura Office (JAAS Secretariat) by email, phone or fax, and provide the following information: name, affiliation, phone number, email address, whether you are attending the conference or not, whether you are giving a presentation or not, and whether you are attending the general meeting or not. If you are giving a presentation, please also state the format of your presentation (oral, poster or forum), whether you are willing to change the format of your presentation, if necessary, name of presenter/s, and title of your presentation. If you are not attending the general meeting, please fill in a proxy form. All deadlines are the same as when done online.

The refund will be made at a later date after deducting the bank transfer fee.
Accommodation
There are no hotels near the campus, so please make your own accommodation reservations along the Midosuji line and Kita-Osaka Kyuko lines, which are relatively easy to access.
Childcare Service & Support for the hearing impaired
We are planning to provide a day care area at the conference venue. Details is February 29, 2024.
