News and Updates

Greetings from the secretariat of the 61th JAAS Annual Conference

20 December 2023

The 61st Annual Conference of the Japan Association for African Studies (JAAS) will be held on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, 2024 at the Minoh Campus of Osaka University. Due to the transition to Category 5 of COVID-19, the conference will be a face-to-face-only event, not a hybrid event. A reception will also be held for the first time since the Corona Disaster. We hope to make the conference an enjoyable, interesting, and lively discussion, which is typical of JAAS.

Preparations for the conference are being made by the Executive Committee, which consists of volunteer members of the School of Foreign Studies & the Division of Foreign Studies, Graduate School of Humanities, Osaka University. Those who know the former Minoh campus may be prepared for the thought: “Are we going deep into the mountains?”, but this is not the case. In April 2021, the campus has moved to Semba-Higashi, Minoh. On March 23, 2024, the Kita-Osaka Kyuko Line (which connects to the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line) will be extended to open “Minoh Semba Handai-mae Station”. The campus is less than a three-minute walk from the station!

The Executive Committee looks forward to welcoming you to the Minoh Campus, which has been reborn as an urban campus. We look forward to your participation.
